Warne may not play IPL from next year

Kolkata: Rajasthan Royals skipper and spin bowling legend Shane Warne on Friday said there was a 50-50 chance of him returning to India as a cricketer for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"I am not sure if I will return as a cricketer next year. At the moment it's 50-50," Said Warne, who led the Rajasthan Royals to the title in the maiden edition of the league two years back.

Warne said he has thoroughly enjoyed his three-year stint with the Royals.

"I love India and I have a lot of friends here. I am 40 years old and it takes time to get into the groove coming from a lay-off. This year it took me a couple of games to find the rhythm. But since then I have bowled well," he said.

Rajasthan Royals, who wrap up their round-robin matches Saturday against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, have very slim chances of making it to the semi finals.

If they fail to make the cut, Eden Gardens could be witness to the last game of the Aussie leg spinner.

Franchise owners to toe BCCI line

New Delhi: Franchise owners of the Indian Premier League have decided to toe the line of the BCCI and say they will accept a board-appointed IPL chairman, sources have told CNN-IBN.

The sources said the IPL team owners have refuted reports of going against BCCI president Shashank Manohar and said they will abide by the Board's decision. This is in complete contrast to reports that had emerged on Tuesday that indicated that owners wanted the board to hear them before deciding on the fate of IPL commissioner Lalit Modi.

As of Tuesday, seven team owners were reportedly backing Modi. Modi has already received unabashed praise from Vijay Mallya, owner of Bangalore Royal Challengers, who said there is no need to replace the architect of the IPL as its commissioner. And Modi was quick to tweet thanks for the gesture.

Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy, who bought the new Pune franchise, also said: "One thing is important - Modi has done tremendous work for IPL and one should note that."

Clash of the titans: Sachin, Kumble take aim

Mumbai: This one promises to be the game of the IPL with Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indians taking on the star power of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first semi-final on Wednesday. And the prize at stake is the chance to be just one step away from IPL glory.

The two teams being the best in the competition had many wanting to see them in the finals but Bangalore's slip at the end of the league stage made them fall to the fourth place and hence, meet the in-form Mumbai in the semi-final itself.

But the fact that Bangalore thrashed Mumbai on their home turf at the Brabourne Stadium just over a month ago will give them a boost. The Royal Challengers, who after losing their first game, played some sublime cricket to emerge as one of the favourites this year. However, they have lost momentum and are a little short of confidence going into the knockout game.

Their worry will be the slump Jacques Kallis has hit after some peerless knocks. The opener, who had the Orange Cap in his firm grip, has failed to get going in the last few games, which has put pressure on what has to be the strongest middle order in the IPL. If Kallis regains his form, Bangalore's flamboyant batsmen get the license to go all out, something which they have not been privileged to in the last few outings.

Kevin Pietersen's 62 off 29 against Rajasthan may be a fortune-tuner for Bangalore as one of the most destructive players of the modern games has hit form and will be raring to have a go at Mumbai. Pietersen along with Bangalore's man-of-the-season Robin Uthappa will be decisive against Mumbai. If either of the two manage to stick around for a sizable amount of time, no total is beyond reach for Bangalore.

Bangalore have two finishers in Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor while Rahul Dravid adds solidity and makes the batting versatile.

Mumbai, on the other hand, depend largely on their skipper Sachin Tendulkar. Though the ensemble cast is impressive, Tendulkar's success in an innings is almost imperative for them. Ambhati Rayadu and Saurabh Tiwary can hold their own but they are at their best when they have the master guiding them at the other end. Tendulkar, like Kallis, seems to be running out of steam as the IPL reaches its business end. It may have to do more with fatigue than form in case of both the champion players.

Apart from Tendulkar, Mumbai batting has the burly Kieron Pollard, who now has hit form and will be perhaps the biggest worry for the Bangalore bowlers. Bangalore's bowlers, apart from Anil Kumble and Dale Steyn, lack experience and if Mumbai launch into the likes of Vinay Kumar, Bangalore may leak plenty.

Although the Mumbai team has the best batsman in the world in their team, their strength lies in their phenomenal bowling. Zaheer Khan, Lasitha Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, Ryan McLaren, all have made batsmen struggle in the tournament and the tall Bangalore batting has to draw all their ability and experience to get on top of them.

The battle will be between the Bangalore batting and the Mumbai bowling, and it can be said the side that wins the battle will get a foot in the doors to the final, unless the master Sachin Tendulkar or the old warhorse Anil Kumble decide otherwise.

Heat wave toll touches 50 in Orissa

Bhubaneswar: With two more deaths in Orissa on Saturday, the sunstroke toll mounted to 50 as the state continued to reel under prolonged heatwave, officials said.

The deaths were reported from Angul and Jajpur districts. Titlagah, Balangir and Bahwanipatna were the worst affected areas in the western part of the state where the mercury touched 44 degrees celsius.

Sambalpur, Hirakud, Sundargarh and Talcher recorded temperatures above 43 degree celsius, they said.

However, temperature at Bhubaneswar remained static at 38.4.

Woman teacher has sex with pupil, arrested

London: A teacher at a leading private school in Britain had sex with a 16-year-old pupil after one of his friends had dared him to kiss her, a court was told.

Twentyfive-year-old Hannah McIntyre invited three boys to her flat in the Waterloo area of Liverpool in January 2008, Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.

Blast delays start of game by one hour

Bangalore: The game between hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians was delayed by an hour on Saturday after a low intensity blast next to the generator room of the Chinnaswamy stadium left six people injured.

The blast took place just half hour before the two captains were to walk into the middle for the toss। While initial reports suggested that the blast had taken place in the generator room itself, police later clarified that it was caused by explosives kept near Gate No 12.

Bangaore Police Commisisoner Shankar Bidari said in a statement: "At about 3.15 pm a minor blast has taken place in the wall adjacent to the gate No 12 of the stadium. Four constables were hurt - two were minor injuries. One security guard has been hurt seriously.

"It appears that some explosives may have been hidden in the wall. There is no cause for panic. The game will go on. The bomb-experts are investigating. Perhaps, the explosives were placed behind a plastic board which was on the board. It was a single-brick wall. The explosives weren't powerful."

The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked for a report from the state government for the lapse in security.

Twin blasts in Bangalore stadium before IPL match

Bangalore: Bangalore's M Chinnaswamy Stadium was rocked by two low intensity bomb blasts on Saturday afternoon just an hour before the Indian Premier League match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers, Bangalore was scheduled to start.

The blasts took place in the generator room, which is situated near Gate No। 12 of the stadium. Eleven people were injured in the blast. Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar Bidri said the police suspected that someone had planted some explosives inside a bag behind the plastic boards in the generator room.

"It wasn't a powerful explosion. We are looking for clues. There is no cause for panic. We have called the forensic experts," said Bidri.

Karnataka Cricket Association also termed the explosion as a minor incident.

"It's a minor incident in the generator room. No need to worry. We will have a delayed start (of the match) though," Karnataka Cricket Association Assistant Secretary Sudhakar Rao was quoted as saying by the PTI.

The players of both the teams - Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers, Bangalore, were inside the stadium when the blasts took place.

Security has been tightened in Kolkata following the blast in Banglore. Kolkata Knight Riders take on Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens in the second IPL match of the day.

Rohit guides Deccan to crucial win against Kings XI

Dharamsala: Rohit Sharma`s breezy unbeaten 68 overshadowed Mahela Jayawardene`s sparkling knock as defending champions Deccan Chargers pipped Kings XI Punjab by five wickets to keep alive their semifinal hopes in the Indian Premier League here tonight at scenic Dharmshala cricket ground.

Chasing a 175-run victory target, the Chargers fumbled and faltered but Rohit stayed till the end to guide the side to 178 for five in 19.1 overs.

Rohit`s eighth IPL fifty was the cornerstone of Deccan Chargers` win as the defending champions recorded their seventh victory in 13 matches to jump to the fourth place in the points table.

Rohit`s unbeaten 38-ball knock included six fours and three sixes.

Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene (93 not out) starred in two identical 86-run stands with skipper Kumar Sangakkara (52 of 37 balls) and Yuvraj Singh (20) to power Kings XI Punjab to 174 for three.

Deccan began the tricky chase on an unconvincing note, losing skipper Adam Gilchrist (9) in the second over sent down by Irfan Pathan when Juan Theron took a skier at extra cover.

T Suman (43 of 31 balls) then added 41 runs for the second wicket with Monish Mishra (20) and another 66 with Rohit to steady the innings as Deccan put their chase back on track.

Aware of the task at hand, Rohit began rather gingerly, playing balls according to merit। Suman, on the other hand, kept clearing the ropes, hitting Theron, Irfan Pathan and Yuvraj Singh for massive sixes before Piyush Chawla got the better of him in the 14th over.
Next man in Andrew Symonds (4) didn`t last longer but Rohit grew strong in confidence. The right-hander hit Shalabh Srivastava for what was the 500th six of the IPL, which was preceded by a boundary.

Srivastava was hit over the ropes in his next over as well as Rohit looked in imperious form and he stayed put till the last ball to see them home.

Earlier put into bat, the Punjab side lost opener Shaun Marsh in the first over but the 86-run stand between Sangakkara and Jayawardene shored up the innings.

Jayawardene cashed in on the live he got when batting on 21 and provided the late charge with an unbeaten 62-ball knock studded with 13 fours and two sixes.

Deccan Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist played safe on an unpredictable pitch, asking Kings XI Punjab to bat first and
as if to justify the decision, Ryan Harris struck in the very first over.

Shaun Marsh could only manage a faint edge that nestled into Gilchrist`s gloves behind the stumps as the Australian left-hander departed with a golden duck against his name.

Deccan didn`t get another chance to celebrate in the next 10 overs with the Sri Lankan duo of Sangakkara and Jayawardene stitching together an 86-run stand that propped up the Punjab side.

Jayawardene could not have prospered beyond 21 but Rahul Sharma gave him a life when he dropped the right-hander off Pragyan Ojha`s bowling.

Shaun Marsh`s brother in the rival camp Mitchell was pressed into service in the fourth over and Sangakkara greeted him with back-to-back boundaries.

Andrew Symonds was hit over backward square leg for a six and in the next over Sangakkara struck Ojha for two fours on the trot to cruise to a half-century but fell in the next over, courtesy a suicidal reverse sweep that went terribly wrong.

Next man in Yuvraj Singh`s (20) struggle was evident as the left-hander, going through a prolonged bad patch, took seven balls to get off the mark.

In contrast, Jayawardene was on song, hitting Rohit Sharma for a six and following it with a boundary.

He inflicted more damage in the next over, hitting the hapless RP Singh for five successive fours, the first of which brought up his fifty.

The former Sri Lanka captain was not content yet. He hit Harris for back-to-back fours in the penultimate over and collected a four and six of the final over bowled by RP Singh to swell the tally.

Jayawardene`s aggression could be assessed from the fact that the last five overs yielded 76 runs, costing the Punjab side just one wicket.

Proteas will do well in T20 WC despite IPL flopshow: Pollock

Johannesburg: South Africans may not have shone in the Indian Premier League but they will perform well in the Twenty20 World Championship as national pride would be at stake in the West Indies, feels former captain Shaun Pollock.

The 12 Proteas in action at the IPL have not made much of a mark but Pollock said that is no indication of how they would perform in the World cup starting April 28.

"Much has been made of Proteas players under-performing in this season`s Indian Premier League and how it might affect team morale come the Twenty20 World Championships," Pollock told a weekly।
Contrary to what some may think, quite a lot of the squad members have had very little game time in the IPL, and I think that will be a motivating factor," Pollock added.

"One should remember that the guys will be playing for their country again and that counts for a lot as there is a collective pride and unity present. Naturally it will extend to performances on the field as every member knows each other pretty well."

South Africa`s top wicket-taker also said that the return of captain Graeme Smith after he was put out of the IPL because of an injury would also give the Proteas a boost.

"We have seen the batting order very much depends on the impetus (Smith) gives to the team."

Blasts at Chinnaswami Stadium delays RCB-MI clash

Bangalore: Minutes before the Royal Challangers Bangalore host Mumbai Indians at the Chinnaswami Stadium in Bengaluru, there was a major security scare when 2 minor blasts occurred in the generator room at one of the gates of the stadium.

The blast left 6 people wounded including a policeman and a private security guard posted at gate No 11. The injured and immediately rushed to the Mallya hospital.

While the first blast took place at the Anil Kumble circle, the second explosion took place at the gate number 12.

The explosion triggered panic as it came an hour before the start of the IPL match has resulted in a delayed start.

Reports claim that an over-heated generator might have caused the blasts.

The police, it is believed, are not taking any chances as the security forces have launched into an over-drive to avoid further mishaps.

2 explosions outside Bangalore stadium

BANGALORE: Two explosions have been heard outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. There are reports that six to eight people have been injured.

The blasts are of low intensity, according to the police. One security guard has been injured seriously in the explosion.

The IPL match between teams Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians was scheduled for 4pm today. The toss which takes place at 3:30pm has been delayed.

"It's a minor incident in the generator room. No need to worry. We will have a delayed start though... may be of 10-15 minutes," Sudhakar Rao, assistant secretary of the Karnataka Cricket Association, said.

The cause of the blast is being ascertained. Both the teams are inside the stadium. Mumbai have already qualified for the semifinals but Bangalore are close to securing a last-four place.

Priyanka Chopra talks about her favourite men!

Mumbai: Priyanka Chopra, who takes pride in being called as the ‘self-made’ actress in Bollywood, recently talked about her favourite four co-stars. Ironically, the name of ex-beau Harman Baweja was missing from the list but Piggy Chops perhaps wanted to erase the ‘Love Story’ episode out of her memory. Talking to a news daily, Priyanka praised Shah Rukh in the most glowing terms. “I have been very vocal about my feelings for Shah Rukh Khan. I can’t tell you how proud, excited and humbled I am that he called me a ‘Shero’.”
“Praise coming from someone I idolise means a lot more to me. It feels even better because when you are self-made, you are constantly looking for someone to say that you are doing the right thing,” the actress further said.

Talking about her once ‘very close friend’ Akshay, the lady said, “My television debut with ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ is super exciting. I don’t see it as me replacing Akshay Kumar. How can I? Akshay is the original khatron ka khiladi, so I’m not even going to try. I will fail miserably. What I’m going to do is to bring my own personality into the show.”

The actress also had some lovely things to say about Ranbir Kapoor. “I didn’t know him too well when I left for the ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ schedule in New York. We got to know each other there. He is a phenomenal co-actor, someone who keeps you on your toes. He has a certain sense of give and take. A certain sense of listening. As a person, he is super fun. We were always laughing and joking. It was a great outdoor,” she said.

And finally, she talked about Shahid Kapoor, who is rumoured to be her latest beau. “It is sheer coincidence that Shahid and I were in Goa at the same time. All of Bollywood was there when I landed in Goa a couple of weeks ago. It was designer Abu Jaani’s 50th birthday. My shoot was cancelled, so my best friend Tamana and I decided to go there for a day. Everyone was there including Shahid, Abhishek, Ash and a whole load of others.”

'CRPF’s tactical mistakes led to Dantewada massacre

ndia has just witnessed another dangerous and horrifying attack by Naxals. The Maoist guerrillas slaughtered seventy-five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a lone Chhattisgarh policeman in the forests of Dantewada district in Bastar region on April 06.

Home Minister P Chidambaram has even offered to step down in the wake of the brutal attack that left him “shocked”. Albeit the “buck stops at his desk”, yet the Home Minister’s resignation would not have helped in stopping the menace called Naxalism.

Many questions arise post-Dantewada. In an exclusive interview with Biplob Ghosal of Zeenews.com, Prakash Singh, an expert on anti-Naxal operations, discusses the reasons that led to the massacre as well as the possible solution to the problem.

Prakash Singh is former director general of the Border Security Force.

Biplob: What are the reasons behind the Dantewada massacre? Why did it happen?

Singh: It happened because security forces are trying to regain the area where the Naxals have established their sway. In the process, they carried out an operation but during this, the CRPF unit committed a number of operational blunders for which they paid a heavy price.

Biplob: Why did the security forces fail to thwart such an attack?

Singh: They failed because they did not observe the general rules of jungle warfare. First, when you are moving in a jungle you shouldn’t be using a vehicle; you should be travelling on foot. Second, when you are using a particular route to go somewhere, you should never use the same route while returning, as they did in this case.

When you are travelling and there is any high ground along the route, one should send a road opening party to make sure that there is nobody hiding along the high ground. The high ground needs to be captured and dominance should be established and then only the forces should be asked to move on. There was high ground, which they ignored.

There were, according to the DGP, Chhattisgarh, reports of a huge infiltration of Maoists from the contiguous areas. It all appears to have been ignored by the CRPF. So, it is surprising that with such massive presence and movement of Maoists in the area, the CRPF didn’t have any specific warning about their possible plan to strike at forces.

The state police should take the lead role in counter-insurgency operations. The paramilitary forces can only play the supporting role. However, at the ground level it appears that at most of the places, it is the central forces which are taking the initiative and the state police are playing a subsidiary role, sometimes merely providing a guide, as it appears to have been the case in the Dantewada incident. The equation must be set right.

Barack Obama 'a monkey', tweets Australian

Melbourne: A young member of an Australian party called US President Barack Obama "a monkey" on Twitter, leading to a demand for his expulsion from the party.

Nick Sowden, a member of the Queensland Young Liberal National Party, posted messages on Twitter on Thursday night while Obama was being interviewed by ABC's Kerry O'Brien, a media report said.

His tweet said: "I'm not sure why they paid Kerry to fly to America, if they wanted an interview with a monkey surely a Ferry to Taronga would have sufficed."

Another said: "If I wanted to see a monkey on TV id watch Wildlife Rescue."

Sowden, who is in his 20s on Friday morning said the comments were a joke and he told Fairfax Radio: "I think the people who follow me know this ... and the people on Twitter don't, unfortunately."

Scores of party members on Friday morning called on the party senior executive to dismiss Sowden, president Rod Schneider told brisbanetimes.com.au.

"He doesn't speak for us, he doesn't hold a role (with the party). My phone has been off the hook with Young Liberal National Party members. I've had 20 emails saying 'this guy doesn't represent us'."

"I think he's got a very, very short shelf life. He's got a list of indiscretions. In extenuating circumstances, we can move (expulsion) forward," Schneider was quoted as saying.

While confirming that Sowden was an ordinary member of the Liberal National Party, a spokesperson said it was likely he would face disciplinary proceedings.

"Australia is a free country, people can make comments. But it is up to other members of our party to determine how they believe members within our party should behave."

Aishwarya and Vivek to make a comeback?

Talk about ex-lovers coming together on screen. B'town is abuzz with the news that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan might act with ex-boyfriend Vivek Oberoi in Satish Kaushik's new film called Tansen.

The two were paired together in Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na (2004), after which Ash and Vivek broke up।

Ash married Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007. Since then, she has chosen films carefully, mostly working with husband Abhishek Bachchan and father-in-law.

Well, the actress did work with other heroes, but Vivek and she couldn't see eye to eye. Abhishek will be there with his wife in Tansen, too, playing her hero. Vivek had better watch out!

No vulgarity in bathing scene: Neetu Chandra

Actress Neetu Chandra doesn't like to be called a bold actress and says her much-in-news bathing scene in Jagmohan Mundhra's Apartment is not at all vulgar.

"There is no vulgarity or cheapness in the shower scene। The shot gives an illusion that I am not wearing anything but it is a trick of the camera। It's an illusion that the filmmakers have created because I wasn't comfortable shooting otherwise," Neetu, 25, told.

The actress, who made an appearance as a temptress on UTV Bindass' Emotional Atyachaar to promote her film, says she feels disturbed when people react strongly to such scenes.

"I play a hostel girl in the movie and in that particular scene I am just thinking about something while bathing. Now this is something so many of us do and can connect with. Besides, you can't wear a lehenga in the bathroom. What's realistic cinema then?" said Neetu.

Comparisons are being drawn between her bathing scene and a similar scene by veteran actress Smita Patil in 1980 film Chakra.

Commenting upon that, Neetu said, "Back then even Smita Patil knew what she was doing. It's not wrong. I don't do films because they have bold scenes. I do bold scenes if the script demands," she said.

The mention of her being known as a bold actress in Bollywood ticks off Neetu, who drew the ire of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists for her girl-on-girl photo shoot for a magazine last year.

"Where have I done bold roles? I have not done any bold role. In Traffic Signal, I played a simple girl, in One Two Three I played a police officer and was covered in uniform throughout."

"Then in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! also I am not wearing revealing clothes and neither have I done anything shocking in Rann in which I play a model. So what is bold? Even in Apartment this is just a scene which you won't even care about when you see the film," she said in an agitated tone.

No cricket bats in 12 weeks?

London: Cricket could be facing a world shortage of bats as a result of a European Union directive, according to a report in England on Friday.

The bizarre crisis follows an EU decision to outlaw before export the chemical methyl bromide, which is an insecticide used to treat the wood in bats, because it is said to damage the ozone layer।

Each year around 100,000 raw blades made of willow, known as clefts, are exported from England to India and Pakistan where they are made into the finished product.

But the wood cannot leave the country without a fumigation certificate and India and Pakistan do not accept any alternative treatment for the wood apart from methyl bromide.

It is feared the 10 million pounds a year industry could go bust within three months unless a solution is found - potentially plunging cricket into chaos.

Geoff Watling of Anglian Willow Services told the Daily Express: "We have just been following procedures introduced many years ago by the Ministry of Agriculture. Now our entire future is under threat because of an EU directive.

"We were told a form of heat treatment can be used as an alternative but it just doesn't work. It was not a helpful solution.

"Unfortunately the Indian Government cannot allow our willow to be imported without a treatment certificate. On that basis I give our industry 12 weeks to survive. We alone have 1,400 prepared trees ready to go.

"Unless something is done we are going to run out of cricket bats. The worldwide supply of Test standard and Twenty20 bats for the national and county sides could dry up within two years."

A Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesman confirmed to the Daily Telegraph: "Under the Montreal Protocol methyl bromide was banned from 2005 in the developed world, except for quarantines, pre-shipment and critical uses.

Woman turns into sex addict after a fall

Rajasthan Royals violated forex norms: Probe

MUMBAI: It seems there's a lot more to the mystery surrounding the IPL Rajasthan Royals franchise than just knowing who its investors are. On the investment front, there were already a lot of questions doing the rounds — such as what is Lalit Modi's brother-in-law and co-owner Suresh Chellaram's association with the franchise.

Also, Rupert Murdoch's son Lachlan Murdoch has never been in the forefront so far.

However, it's not just about these mysterious owners who bought the team in 2008. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently initiated a probe into the funding pattern of the franchise and it was found that the funds came directly to the IPL from tax havens that are being investigated.

"It is a foreign exchange violation as the investments were not made in a company but in BCCI. A company was set up after the funds came in and later the money was converted to form the Rajasthan Royals equity," a source said.

Rajasthan Royals was the cheapest of eight franchises when the first team auctions were held in 2008. There are questions being raised about whether there was favouritism in awarding the cheapest franchise to Chellaram.

Terrorists may be planning attacks in India: US advisory

WASHINGTON: Terrorist groups may be planning attacks in India, the US has warned in its latest advisory and asked its nationals to exercise caution during their stay in the country.

Alerting US citizens, the Department of State said: "The US government continues to receive information that terrorist groups may be planning attacks in India."

The February 2010 bombing in Pune and the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai provide a vivid reminder that hotels, markets, trains and other public places in India are especially attractive targets for terrorist groups, it said in the advisory.

"Terrorists and their sympathisers have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where US citizens or Westerners are known to congregate or visit," the State Department said.

The latest advisory replaces the Travel Alert dating January 29 and will expire on May 30.
